sale for a rare if not unique mid 19th century treen carved bog oak / found art owl sculpture.

The head of the sculpture is unique in that it is actually a pebble resembling the head of an owl found by the the original owner of the sculpture - the base of the owl was then commissioned and carved out of Irish bog oak and the two items together form the entire sculpture of an owl.

The carving is of high quality and can be attributed to Kerryman Cornelius Goggin, who bore the title \"Irish bog carver to Her Majesty\" (Queen Victoria) who was in the business of carving bog oak artefacts at 13, Nassau Street Dublin, as early as the 1860\'s. (A very similar carved owl inkwell was recently sold in sale for £2,000.

The carving itself is both charming and well executed and was embellished with metal claws and a chain - a couple of the overlaid claws are missing but the carved claw underneath remains - and the chain is present but only attached on one end - there is a split to the front of the base and age worn green felt on the underside - age related wear only - the carved owl body and shamrock carved base remain intact and display very well.

This is a unique and charming carved Irish bog oak / found art owl sculpture from the early 19th century and would grace any collection or museum display.

Height including head is 6 inches

Height of carved bog oak body is 4 1/2 inches

I have not got any idea what the market value of this unique Cornelius Goggin bog oak treen carving is other than that it is a wonderful work of antique Irish art that is irreplaceable and therefore aesthetically priceless.
