Description

This sale is for an antique Victorian Christening Coat circa 1890-1900. It is very unique and well-made. The upper cape can be thrown back to reveal the top of the coat and the sleeves. There are two buttons at the top and the rest of the front is open with no fasteners. It is 37\" long.

I had an online appraisal done and this is what they had to say:

Mixed fabric including hand tatted lace, satin and cotton.

European in origins and more of a christening coat than gown. Often used for

boys because it is less \"dress\" like in appearance.

It was well made and would have been an expensive item when new, however

the condition does mean that the values are not high. It would be difficult to

restore this sadly. When textiles begin to perish any manipulation or excessive

handling can result in more damage. This is the type of item which would be

perfect for framing in a shadowbox. Despite the damage it is delightful.

The appraisal also suggested that the coat/gown has turned yellow with age, I assumed that this was the original color since all of it is the same color, but if it were a christening item I am guessing it would have started as white.

The bow has come unsewn from the collar and the lace has pulled away from the right side sleeve. There is also a red mark on the left shoulder and a small hole on the back collar. Please review the photos.

I had a wonderful member of the community take the time to email me regarding what the appraiser thought was hand-tatting. I appreciate the info!

No disrespect intended but there is no tatting on this sweet coat. The collar trim is bobbin lace. The flowers are a braid like rickrack that have the points tacked to the center to make the flower. The trim on the sleeves is a braid that is sewn in place. Tatting looks like little circles/arches (O=O=O=O) that are made entirely of tiny knots. The trim on the sleeves resembles tatting but it is not made of knots. Info from a tatting teacher

Shipping

I apologize if shipping costs seem high. Your shipping cost includes tracking and insurance. Most items will ship via USPS Priority Mail unless otherwise noted. Other options are always available. Please email me if you would like a price quote on a different shipping option.

If you are an international buyer, please know your local regulations regarding customs feesand prohibited items. After 6 years in this business I just found out that Iam not allowed to ship footwear or leather items to Italy. I had no idea. While most things get through with no problems, which is why I did not know, if a prohibited item gets stopped in customs Imay not be able to get it back and it may not get to you either. Ido apologize, Ican understand not being able to ship live animals or contagious diseases, but shoes? Also, I cannot mark items \"gift\" as this constitutes mail fraud.

The item is as-is and is in used condition unless otherwise stated. However, I will refund your money if the item is misrepresented. I do my best to accurately describe each item and will only accept returns if the item sent does not match my description or I was completely wrong about a detail. Items that are physically picked up by the buyer may not be returned after the buyer has taken possession of the item.

All items will incur a $2.25 handling fee -- which is used for insurance andfor delivery confirmation. Buyer is responsible for providing transportation, materials, and manpower necessary to retrieve any items that are pick-up only unless arranged differently with seller. Buyer must respond within 3 days (sooner preferably) of the end of the sale to my invoice and/or email.

I will always leave response, but only once I know that you have received your item and that you are happy with our transaction. If there is a problem, please let me know first and I will try to work it out to our mutual satisfaction. SOS! Consignments is an e-consignment business.
