This large antique Victorian butterfly brooch consists of bright white crystal clear diamond like paste stones, bubblegum pink sapphire like pastes and blue Ceylon sapphire like pastes. The colored paste stones are open backed. The white stones are foiled and closed in the back. There are two polished rubies for the eyes.

The metal is sterling silver with Gold plating on the back, but has worn off in some areas. You can see the gold on the pendant mechanism. The tiny hinge for the pendant folds down when used as a brooch. The pin back has a C clasp and a large hinge that is in good working condition. There is also a large hook on the back for hanging a watch.

There is one area on the inner top wing of the butterfly that is darkened where the paste is also dark and not clear. Also, there are a couple of other stones that appeared to be somewhat faded but they are tiny and barely noticeable. There is one stone on the lower right Wing that is missing.There is some tarnish on the back but with a polishing cloth should come right off.

This is a one-of-a-kind piece. The pictures do not capture the sparkly brightness of the stones.

The quality and craftsmanship are impressive. This makes me think that this piece was quite possibly made to be a decoy of a diamond original created specifically by the jewelers for insurance purposes.

These paste pieces have become very collectible and valuable in their own right.

I am very careful to check the items before shipping and while packaging to ensure they arrive exactly like the pictures.
