This is a beautiful antique Victorian or Edwardian period circa 1900 sterling silver Scottish agate Luckenbooth brooch.
The Luckenbooth is an ancient Scottish lovers token where two hearts are merged into one and often have a crown on top to symbolise the crowning of the merger.
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The stones are beautiful classic orange and red jaspers from the Campsie Fells in Stirlingshire, green and red speckled bloodstones from the Isle of Rum and facetted glass amethyst and citrine as the thistle plumes.
The brooch has a full set of hallmarks with makers All&d, the anchor for Birmingham assay office, the lion for sterling silver and a faded date letter which I cannot be certain about but will be around 1900. The length is 4.0 cm ( One and three fifth inches ) and the pin and C clasp are in good working condition and original.
