Antique Victorian English Sterling Silver Wine Water Jug Ewer R Hennel (#1284):

Magnificent water or wine jug / Flagon, made London, England circa 1850 by Richard Hennell.

Measures 12inches tall (31cm) and weighs 1130 grams.

Waisted cylindrical shape, narrowing and curving slightly towards the lid. Body beautifully chased and engraved with fruit, scrolls and arches, somewhat Persian in style.
Scrolling, wide handle with original \'natural\' heat insulators. Applied deeply carved foliage at joins of handle, echoed by moulded leaves forming thumbpiece.
Octogonal panelled finial on lid also hints at Persian or Turkish influence. Finial can be removed for ease of cleaning.
Beautifully shaped, generous spout with tulip base.
Empty cartouches under spout allow for monogram or dedication. The shield shaped reserve directly under the spout echoes the tulip shaped bottom of the spout. A curved banner on the base.

Excellent quality and superb workmanship by top English silversmith.

Engraved in block letters under the handle: D.C. RAIT. FECIT.
Fully hallmarked in a number of places:
Next to handle RH lion, leopard head, date letter O and queen\'s head.
On handle: RH, monarch and lion.
Inside lid: RH, lion, date letter.

Condition is generally very good. THe bottom of the base is bent in front - can easilly be straightened out. The inside of the lid has a small dent, that is mentioned only for the sake of accuracy - it does not prevent the lid from closing tightly and cannot be seen from the outside.
