Antique/Victorian Large Folder VALENTINE-Lace Overlay w/MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS + 4 Scraps, c1900

SIZE/FORMAT: Approximately 7 inches square, embossed, 3-layer

CARD COLORS: Silver, gold lines, pansies in various hues of purple

LACE: Large lace overlay with 2 stringed instruments and organ pipes or something similar; reticulated (w/cut-outs, including a window to the center through which is shown a smiling girl holding a bouquet of roses). As is common with these lace overlays, they typically have a center cut-out that is too small to see much of the image underneath. In this case, only the girl\'s face is visible. Tip of 4 corners of lace have some curl, small creases.

DIECUT SCRAPS: 4: 2 florals and 2 cherubs, one of whom is missing his head. Scraps have some edge wear/lifting to top paper layer.

INSIDE: Verse with illustration

SIGNED: No

FROM SCRAPBOOK: No

ADDITIONAL CONDITION INFO: Some perimeter/margin creases and a few tears. There are 3 small tape repairs to some of the tears. Perimeter wear inside and out was very common with these larger cards that had uneven perimeters. Card also shows some thumbing. Colors on front are much brighter/more vivid than my photos show. See my listings for more antique valentines.

This would be a great card for the novice antique valentine collector. For a card that is 115 years old, it\'s in decent condition. One is always able to find bits and pieces bent or torn or missing if one looks hard enough at these intricate, fragile, old pieces of ephemera. I have been a valentine collector since 1984 and have seen antique valentines in all sorts of conditions from poor to mint and have a tendency to notice and point out every flaw which most people don\'t even see, so be sure to have a look at my photos.

Any collector who is just starting out or who has a limited budget cannot go wrong with some of my valentine offerings. Large ornate valentines are great to frame. They are also nice conversation pieces. I have a hall in my house filled with framed valentines. People regularly ask me what those pretty things in the frames are and when I tell them, they are very intrigued to find out more (or maybe they are just being polite!). You will want to protect these from any more damage and a frame is a nice way to do that.

Shipping First Class Package rate with sturdy protection, as card is delicate.

PHOTOS: Please be sure to look closely at my photos as they are an integral part of the description. My photos are often taken in bright natural light or sometimes with a flash, both of which tend to bleach out colors. Normally colors are darker than photos show and light areas are glare from too bright light or flash.

TO SOAK OR NOT TO SOAK-THE SCRAPBOOK DILEMMA: Many of my valentines are rescued from old, beat-up scrapbooks and while the fronts are in good condition, the backs often look horrible with chunks of scrapbook paper, dried glue and some areas of lifting of top paper layer (when card does not separate easily from the scrapbook page). I am not a fan of the soaking procedure: it\'s time-consuming and it\'s a very tricky business. Even if the soak is successful, often the cards never quite look the same: not as sharp and crisp, may show dye runs, ripple, etc. and they take forever to dry completely. Vintage cards and water are a bad mix. When it comes to choosing between a card that shows evidence of having come from a scrapbook and one showing that it has been drowned, I choose the former.

Once my cards are in your hands, of course you may choose to clean up the backs, but please proceed with care and instead of soaking the entire card, try an old toothbrush dipped in water to moisten the scrapbook residue on the back. Use as little water as possible. Once the scrapbook paper is soft, carefully rub it off with the toothbrush or with your finger. For your first attempt, try a card that you don\'t care about in case it all goes downhill. Don\'t forget to press your card flat under a stack of heavy books for a couple of weeks. If you let it air-dry without weight,  it will ripple and curl. Good luck!

Under no circumstances should a card with lace be soaked, unless only the back can be immersed. Paper lace and water are a fatal combination. In a scrapbook album or in a frame, no one will ever see the backs, so best to leave them be.

ANTIQUE/VINTAGE HOLIDAY LISTINGS AND MORE: I\'m currently listing antique and vintage valentines individually and in lots, several with patriotic WW2 motifs. I am also listing vintage Christmas seals/stickers in original packaging, vintage gift tags, some Victorian-Edwardian German Santa die cut scraps, some wonderful Victorian/Edwardian-era Christmas and New Year\'s cards from Prang, Ward, and Tuck, plus many vintage Christmas card lots and other Christmas goodies. I am also listing bargain book lots of both modern and vintage books for adults and children--many are brand new--and lots of vintage children\'s and teen magazines, including many holiday issues, so be sure to check both my sale and store listings.

VIEWING NOTE: If you are using a mobile device, please expand all dropdowns to see more information. You may not be able to access all of my photos or description so I recommend, if possible, that you look at items using the classic view, not the mobile view in your phone\'s app, or that you view listings on a computer. I do my listings on a laptop, so typically offer several photos and a complete description that are worth taking the time to view.

I never know what I\'ll be unearthing and listing next, so please bookmark my store, make me a favorite seller and receive automatic updates when new items are added. I post new listings every week.

SHIPPING: Depending on sales volume, I ship once or twice a week, Wednesday and Friday or Saturday. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I ship more often. Please disregard the 10-business-day shipping estimate. made me choose one. Normally I ship between 2-to-4 days after payment posts. If it is going to be longer than that, I shall e-mail you.

POSTAGE & HANDLING: P&H includes exact postage (within 1-to-2 oz), plus a nominal handling fee to help with the expenses of doing business with /PayPal.

FIRST CLASS LETTER RATE-FIRST CLASS PACKAGE RATE: If card(s) or other flat items weigh(s) 3 oz or less, shipping will usually be by First Class Letter rate (unless cards are large, have rigid or fragile add-ons, such as old mica/glitter, or there are several cards being sold together). First Class Package rate weight tops out at 13 ounces. Letter rate includes flexible, lightweight card stock to protect the card and a USPS surcharge when \"Do Not Bend\" is written on the envelope. Package rate includes sturdy, rigid cardboard and that automatically turns a Letter rate card into a Package rate card, no matter the weight (up to 13 oz). Package rate for 1-3 oz is approximately 2-to-3 times Letter rate.

DELIVERY CONFIRMATION: Additionally, USPS does not allow Delivery Confirmation on the less expensive Letter rate, but does for the Package rate which is automatically included in the shipping quote in each listing. If you want DC, please let me know and I shall revise your invoice to the Package rate.

COMBO SHIPPING: I will be happy to combo ship, but must charge a modest handling fee for each item added to the package. doesn\'t offer a fee discount on combo purchases so I must pass some of that expense on to the buyer. If you are purchasing more than one item from me, please wait for a revised invoice, as the automatic one that sends shows full shipping for each item, and not the discount combo pricing that I offer.

PaymentTimely payment is expected. If there will be a delay, please email to let me know.
