Sterling Silver Locking Tea Caddy - Antique Victorian

An exceptional, fine and impressive, large antique Victorian English sterling silver locking tea caddy; an addition to our silver teaware collection

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver locking tea caddy has an oval convex panelled form.

Each lobed panel is embellished with bands of bright cut engraved and pin struck quatrefoil motifs in addition to a subtle border to each incurve.

The decoration to the body incorporates a plain section to either side forming two vacant cartouches.

The upper and lower rim is encircled with a bright cut engraved and pin struck quatrefoil border with a matte background.

The scalloped upper surface of the tea caddy is embellished with an identical paralleling border to that of the panelled body.

This impressive example of Victorian teaware is fitted with fine and impressive mask and hallmarked sterling silver ring handles to either side.

The caddy is fitted with a hallmarked flush hinged locking cover ornamented with a broad scalloped border subdivided with radiating segments accented with quatrefoil motifs; the flush hinge indicates the fine quality of this piece.

The plain centre of the cover retains the original hallmarked sterling silver lobed oval finial; secured to the interior by a hallmarked screw fitting wing nut.

The casket retains the original fitted fully working lock and the original key with a quatrefoil decorated bow/handle.

The underside of the tea caddy bears the ‘lozenge mark’ which certifies the patent of this piece on 3rd April 1866 with the UK Patent Office.

Condition

This antique tea caddy is an exceptional gauge of silver, fine quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The bright cut engraved and pin struck decoration is very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the caddy and part hallmarks to the interior of the cover, underside of the finial, maker’s mark to the surface of the wing nut and lion passant to the reverse surface of each loop handle are all very clear.

Dear Mr Campbell Thank you very much for sending the pearl necklace: it arrived only a couple of days after purchase, beautifully wrapped and packaged, at 8.30am - so you have a first rate courier service! Could I also say how pleasant and how helpful the girl I spoke to on the telephone was. Her enthusiasm for the necklace, and for the quality of your products, decided me when I was not quite sure this was the item I wanted. Cheerfulness, enthusiasm and courtesy are not often encountered in this kind of call. It was a real pleasure!
So congratulations on your staff! Very best wishes TJ G
Cheriton Bishop, Exeter, UKDear Mr Campbell Making purchases from half way round the world is always an interesting experience. You do the best you can and hope. I can say, with no rear of contradiction, that my dealings with AC Silver and Andrew Campbell is certainly worthy of Front Bench status.
The two George III bottle neck rings were of the first quality, and thoroughly described and generously photographed. The transaction itself was smooth and without flaw. Packing and shipping were without incident and arrival was exactly on time.
It was the \'poster child\' for an ideal transaction. Thank you LG, Venerable Wine Paraphenalia,
