~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This beautiful pair of Victorian shoes came with a wedding gown and date to the circa 1880's.
They are far too rare to be worn, and must be for a collector, or for display.
The shoes have a silk upper in ivory, with the silk edge trim being just a touch darker, perhaps a butterscotch, which matches the two tone elaborate fanned bows at the front.
The entire front of the shoe at the toe area, is minutely beaded and embroidered in silk thread. The embroidery includes delicious French knots and the beads are miniature 'pearls'. Very fine work.
Just behind this detail lies the elaborated two-tone bows, the tops being in the ivory silk, and the lining being in aribbed butterscotch silk as described above.
The shoes are elegant and narrow, with gently rounded toes. The neat heels are 1.5" high.
Inside, in the smallest writing, we see an ink reference number to each shoe. Lined, as always with kid leather and probably linen.
The soles are good, but have been worn. There are the remains of makers stamps to them, unreadable. Together with the usual stamped size references.
Condition: The toes are very clean. The embroidery & beads are gorgeously fresh, with just a couple of beads being a little loose.
The bows are aso very fresh, but sadly the centre of each bow is lost. I may be able to send a few little pearls to place here.
The silk at the sides is a little soiled and marked. The silk at the back and the heels is excellent.
The main issue is to the side seams, which have clearly come undone through history. Here, someone with great care has repaired the stitching and patched the silk edge that goes around the shoes edges.
Sadly, just one of these has come undone again. But not too bad at all.
The insides are clean and fresh.
A delightful pair of Victorian bridal shoes.
