This is a superb large antique Victorian dated 1873 sterling silver Scottish agate and real Cairngorm citrine brooch.The design has been made famous by the Scottish school teacher professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter films who frequently wore this exact design brooch.
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The beautiful gemstones used for this brooch are orange jaspers from the Campsie Fells in Stirlingshire and green and red speckled bloodstones from the Isle of Rum. The lovely facetted stones are quality brandy citrines from the Cairngorm mountain range which have been fully tested by a local jeweller to confirm they are genuine citrines.
The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for brooches of this period, but has been fully tested and is sterling silver. The length is large at 5.8 cm ( Two and a third inches ) and the pin and C clasp are in good working condition and original. The brooch has a diamond registration mark on the back with date letter F for 1873.
