The History

Thisbeautiful piece was made during a period called the Art Nouveau Era! This timewas alsocalled \"La Belle Epoque\" in French which translates to\"A Beautiful Time\". This period was in existence from 1890-1914.

This wasvery true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. The ArtNouveau period was famous for its flowing organic designs, flowing ladies, flowing floral designs, regal designs.

TheRussian silver standard is based on the zolotnik, a coin circulating in KievanRus’ in the late 11th century. It was originally pegged to 1/96th of a Russianpound, which was later changed to 1/72nd of a Russian pound. One zolotnik isequal to 4,266 grams.

A varietyof purities, also called titre ratings, are used for Russian silver. Whenconverted to the metric parts per thousand, there are various levels of purity. The 84 (875/100) degree of purity is by far the most common, and became thestandard for every-day Russian silver purity.

Cloisonnéis a form of enamel work that is used on jewelry and to decorate Fabergé eggs, vases, or other such items. A craftsman would have used thin silver or goldstrips or wires to create compartments on the metal object in a certain design.Enamel would have been specially made to fill these compartments while leavingthe metal visible for added design. The enamel could be made into variouscolors and pieces featuring cloisonné usually have more than one color of enamel.

Russiancloisonné from the Tsarist era is highly prized by collectors, especially if itis from the House of Fabergé or Khlebnikov.

Repoussébegan as an ancient metal working technique, involving malleable silver firstformed with a specially created three-dimensional mold and then further refinedby hammering from the reverse side and adding detail to the front. The finishedwork was intricate, with grooves, indentation and channeling. It was thencarefully polished as an eye-catching treasure.

The Piece

Theearrings include cloisonné style enamel in varying shades of dark blue, lightblue, green, and a red-orange hue.

Theearrings include traditional handmade Art Nouveau Russian Era craftsmanship. The piece was made in the repousse style of soldering two layers of silvertogether. However, this piece is special because the two layers were made ofdifferent purities of silver, .875 and .900 respectively. This technique wasvery rare due to the different melting points of the silver, if the craftsmanhad been a few degrees off, the entire piece would have been ruined. The pieceis made of intricate compartments for the enamel, as well as swirled designswithin and silver braided tassels that are graduated in length.

Theearrings measure just about 3\" long and just over 3/4\" wide. Theearrings are secured by a Shepard\'s Hook backing with a safety catch.
