We present a super quality expansive landscape study in watercolours with bodycolour, of a dense forest interior at dusk, deer central, the forest floor lit by shafts of sunlight – a compelling and embracing study by Leeds School artist, Thomas Sutcliffe, signed and indistinctly dated lower central-right, 1868.  Thomas Sutcliffe (British, 1828 – 1873) was born and lived most of his life in the Leeds area, notably Headingley.  He married Sarah Lorentia Button and they had a large family together; his eldest son was the celebrated photography pioneer Francis Meadow Sutcliffe.  Sutcliffe was largely self-taught but gained much attention for the quality of his inspiring watercolours.  He was elected to the Institute of Painters in Watercolours and became a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy, London.  He was said to excel at landscapes but also painted figures and tended to the pre-Raphaelite School in his treatment of his subjects.  His works included a series of 50 paintings of the Yorkshire coast from Hull to Redcar.  Many examples of the work of Thomas Sutcliffe can be seen on artprice.com, arcadia, com, mutualart.com, askart.com, artnet.com  and findartinfo.com, besides the leading international sale sites of christies.com and bonhams.com.  Presented in very good condition in a later frame, retaining its original dark wood base panel, this painting will look fabulous displayed.  IN A FIXED PRICE sale SALE, WE WILL CONSIDER OFFERS FOR THIS PAINTING
