antique wooden GOTTLOB HERMANN HULLER SCHONECK flute, C L.P., made in Germany :
$620.00

This estate find is a wooden flute made in Germany by Gottlob Hermann Huller of Shoeneck and is marked C L.P. meaning (in C, low pitched). The sounding length when measured from the center of the embouchure to the end of the flute is 605 mm. It is marked with the logo G H and a large S around the G H. , (the Gottlob Hermann Huller of Shoeneck logo), MADE IN GERMANY, and SUPERTONE on the back of the barrel.
I could not find a serial number. I recently had a school band teacher examine the flute and she found a partial serial number on it, but the remaining part was worn off. This flute is a black Grenadilla(African black wood) wooden flute with pads and corks that are in good condition and no cracks/fractures in the wood parts. Metal parts are in very good condition, with only one small nick on the edge of barrel, as shown in picture three. Metal slide tubing parts look very good. It came with cork grease and corks have been conditioned with it. The mouth piece is not wood. It appears to be made of an ebonite material, which I was informed is commonly seen in these. The inside of the breath hole (embouchure) has 2 \'cracks\'? on opposite sides of the the hole, one is shown in picture 8. Not sure if this is damage, both appear to be same size.
This item has been examined at two different music stores. I was told it appears very nice. I was informed that it was a Boosey & Hawkes, but this is NOT the case. The lettering in the logo is G H and not B H, as the first person thought.
I am not an expert, so I am offering it AS IS. I do know that it was played, on occasion by a relative of the owner within the last 15 years. I spoke with this person at the estate sale. It comes in an older wooden case that is not the original flute case, an oboe case, I believe. I could not find an identification number on this flute.ADDITIONAL PHOTOS HAVE RECENTLY BEEN INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING.Information that I found on this brand of flute is as follows:
The stamp on this flute is a lyre and the initials GH inside an S. Below that is\"made in Germany/ C / L.P.\" As it is unlikely that the words \"made in\" wouldhave been used before they were required, this allows us to date the instrumentafter 1923.

In comparing this flute to another of its time I found the following information:

The \"L.P.\" stamped onthe Hüller also appears (in another place) on the Kohlert, and stands for\"low pitch\", A=435 in the case of these flutes. These two instrumentsare the same size and play at the same pitch. Yet one is stamped \"D\"and the other \"C\". Why? The Kohlert is stamped \"D\" becauseof the long-standing and perfectly logical idea that the standard size flutewas \"in D\" because its basic scale was D major. The Hüller is stamped\"C\" because the way terms were used waschangingand it became appropriate to say theflute was \"in C\" because it was the standard size and not atransposing instrument.
