This fabulous survivor was discovered at a Luxembourg flea market a decade or so ago and returned to the US as a prized souvenir. Entirely and wrought of HEAVY gauge iron with hand hammered rivets and elaborate twisted and foliate decorative angles, this extraordinary wall mounted alms box measures 21” x 14” x 6 ½” deep overall (including mounting spikes which were cemented into masonry); 8 ¾” x 8 ½” x 4 ½” the main section with single door. It has a most unusual half-moon “back splash” to prevent soiling of the wall and presents a history of repairs and modifications under a waxed layer of light rust and worn paint. Note where the lock was originally keyed from the side; the current lock is a late 19th century specimen attached via machine screws from the front. The hinging has also changed somewhat since it was originally made over 200 years ago and you will note a 20th c. brazed repair to the single hinge barrel. Inside, the coin deflector is still to be seen and you will note a 20th c. primer/paint.
