Charming & delightful !
We have to talk first about the \"extra\" watercolors done by a former child owner; usually we wouldn\'t offer for sale a book that had been \"used\" for coloring practice ... but here we have the rare exception of a child who actually succeeded in enhancing many of the black and white drawings by their careful paintwork
All throughout the book are, presumably, little Ruth\'s watercolors (gift inscription to her on Christmas, 1913, from Dorothy); there are almost no smears or runs outside of the lines; she reallydid a lovely job and several examples are shown here; many of the drawings have been left alone, and the full page plates in color are also not \"enhanced\"; there are two illustrations in crayon (not with the steady hand of Ruth; perhaps a sibling or friend), but the rest appear to be very neat watercolors ~ just to make it even more fun !, there are tinted pictures in the text as well and sometimes it takes close inspection to determine if they\'re printed or painted !
In addition to Little Ruth\'s work, this is profusely illustrated by many of the relatively little known artists employed by Raphael Tuck & Sons, as well as the wonderful front cover of Santa with children and other pictures ~ several full-page ~ and drawings by Mabel Lucie Atwell, Louis Wain, Agnes Richardson, Gordon Robinson
The stories and pictures include: fairies, a magic flying aerohorse, elves a/k/a Dream Folk, Looking Glass Land (no Alice there), a Christmas ABC, snowmen (and a snow rabbit), A Fairyland Concert, a Muffin Man who\'s actually a muffin, a lion artist, a tame dragon, a tea party, Golliwogs, The Wishing Gate (a song about fairies), dogs and cats throughout, the Man in the Moon, football (soccer) & cricket game with Louis Wain cats, Elf-Land, mermaids, golf (Daddy\'s Caddie), waiting for Santa, The Spoon and Fork Family, a bear in a bathing suit, the proprietor of a cheese shop named Mr. Mouse, a pic-nic, The Christmas Fairy, a few lullabies, a Christmas Song and many other references to the holiday, a woman made of Apples, a little natural history thrown in, Game-Cocks dressed as game boards, etc.
203 pp. ~ very good overall ~ in the original pictorial boards (rubbed along the edges) + a few pages of illustrated offerings of other books by the publisher and several shown on the back cover as well; sweet floral endpapers; original navy blue cloth spine has some wear top and bottom and title in black letters
A fairly large, relatively heavy book, this measures about 7.5\" x 9.5\" x 1.5\" thick ~ although we\'ve gone to some effort to explain about and show the \"hand-coloring\", we cannot emphasize enough what a completely enchanting book this is in spite of (and maybe partly because of) a patient child\'s artwork some 100 years ago
