When King George reined Great Britain, he ordered a consistent unit of measure be established throughout the kingdom. And so the \"Haystack Pitcher\" or jug, was created whereby the unit of measure was identified by stamp or label on the outside of the pitcher. The ale jug could only be made from copper or brass, and twice a year an inspector came to the pub to weigh the pitcher and if it complied ... a lead \"plug\" or what the US would call a \"stamp\", with the initials of the reigning monarch, township, and assay mark was affixed to the jug. This solid brass haystack beauty was made in England, evidenced by the shape exclusive to England, but somewhere along the line - the lead excise stamp (always located on the inside of the spout) was knocked off. Remember, this is Victorian restaurant ware, and these units of measure are expected to have dings and dents. I think it\'s interesting that the 1/2 gallon mark is double struck. This jug has served up a pint or two to be sure; but overall it\'s in remarkably beautiful condition. Thespout and rimare perfectly smooth, no warps or wobbles. No leaks, no holes, nofoul odors or contamination. That being said .... the inside of these servers are lined with tin....just so you know. My client purchased this jug at an antique store in England in 1970 and it has remained in her possession ever since. This antique beer pitcher receives a solid A+!
