Stunning Art Deco chrome and mahogany combination coffee table and hideaway bar, circa 1930s. Pull a cylindrical knob and the mahogany top revolves to reveal a built-in cocktail set. The etched cocktail shaker and glasses have substantial bases, allowing them to rotate 360 degrees in individual swiveling chrome holders as the table top tilts. The chrome bar is one unit, and can be unlatched from the table top and removed for mixology or cleaning. The piece represents the Art Deco style in its most elegant simplicity: The flat plane of the mahogany surface is banded in chrome, thesemicircular legs echoed in miniature form in the diminutive feet.The chrome appears to be nickel plated brass.As in many of the best Art Deco furniture designs, the form recalls the aesthetics of an ocean liner: the bar especially, which seems to have deco railings and in the cocktail shaker, a smoke stack.
The table is in excellent condition, with minor scratches and wear to the mahogany top and light spotting and minor scratches on the chrome (which I have not polished). All of the glassware is immaculate. Without close study, the piece appears aesthetically perfect. I was unable to find a maker\'s mark, but given the quality of materials and design, it is undoubtedly the product of a first-class furniture designer. I found the piece in a time warp of a house that had been in the same family since 1922. Arare and beautiful example of Art Deco design and a hideaway bar second to none.
