ROBJ ART DECO TAMBOURINE DANCERS

Rare, authentic, French bookend statuettes, each depicting a gypsy dancer in long, black dress holding a tambourine in an exotic position. This\"mirror image\" pair reflects early Art Deco\'s fascination with exotic, foreign, and oriental motifs. Beautifully modelled, the dresses have elegantly draped fabric; the faces show rouge and lipstick.
Lovely vintage condition with no cracks, chips or restoration; just some faded/worn gilding as often appears. Hallmarked \"Robj Paris\" on bottom of one base (the impression is extremely faint and my mediocre camera cannot pick it up -- sorry). This lovely pair dates from 1925 - 1930.
Dimensions: 8\" (20.7cm) tall: base is 5.5\" (14cm) wide x 2\" (5.5cm) deep
The book \"Robj Collection\" by Christian Cueni is a wonderful resource; these dancers are the first bookends featured in the \"Bookends\" chapter. It is extremely comprehensive and has high resolution pics of Robj\'s rarest designs as well as original have obtained the following information from other sites for informational purposes:

These book ends are depicted in the book \'Le Ceramiche Robj 1921-1931\' by V. Brega and are also featured in \"Robj Collection\" by Christian Cueni. ROBJ started in 1908 when Jean Born started the production of his own ceramics and porcelains under that name. After the First World War his designs became more artistic and decorative. He died in 1922 after a car accident and his shareholder Lucien Willmetz took over. It was under his supervision that ROBJ became truly successful.

Many of the ROBJ designs from the period are stylish, elegant and original, usually carrying some kind of humor in them. ROBJ designs have been manufactured by well known brands such as Sèvres, Villeroy and Boch, Limoges and many others. He has encouraged the Art Deco and Cubist designers and artists, and provided a showcase for their works. Robj sponsored an annual completion between 1927 and 1931. Robj was not a manufacturer -- his parts were made under commission by various suppliers -- but he can be considered important in the promotion of Art Deco in ceramics in the period that it came of age. The company went out of business in 1931.

Shipping Fees: They may seem high, but I usually lose money. Both and Paypal charge fees on the shipping amount, which in this case will be approx. $3.25. USPS insurance alone will be $7.30. I never charge for shipping materials or \"handling fees\" (which I find repugnant). I take great care to pack items securely and none have ever been damaged in shipment (unlike several that I have received in pieces). If you prefer FedEx or a faster class than USPS Parcel Select, I will be glad to do so at actual cost. I aim to please and be transparent.

offer with confidence: I have collected Art Deco for 35 years and have perfect response for my 19 years on . Please view my other items, as I will be posting more high style deco, John Hardy rings, beautiful 1940s neckties, Ralph Lauren vintage style jackets and vests, RRL, breeches and more. Please feel free to contact me with any requests.

Best of luck to you!
