ARTHUR PALMER, CO. E, 8TH CONNECTICUT INFANTRY, WRITE TO HIS MOTHER ABOUT THE MOVEMENTS IMENT AND
NOTES THAT A BOAT CARRYING THEIR SUPPLIES WAS SWAMPED

A 3 1/2 page letter (7 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches - written in pencil) dated \"Tuesday May 6th 1862\" - \"In camp opposite Newbern, N.C.\" - written by Palmer to his mother. Palmer enlisted on September 6, 1861 as a musician. He writes:

\"Dear Mother: You see by the top of the letter that our regiment has moved from Bog Banks (down near Fort Macon). We are now encamped in sight of Newbern on the opposite side of the river, We left Bog bank on last Thursday and crossed over to Carrolina City here then we spent the night. The next morning we marched to Morhead City here we spent the night and the next day (Saturday) we embarked on board a steamer for Newbern. We left Morhead City at 7 oclock and arrived at Newbern after a splendid trip of 9 hours. We lay at the dock all night and the next morning we got orders to go into camp opposite Newbern. After crossing we marched down on thebank about a mile \"stacked arms\" and waited for our hutsAs luck would have it after they had got an old scow loaded with huts, Company boxes, and other camp equipage & they attempted to tow her down, when near the shore the steamer pulled the scow under water and off flotted boxes , knapsacks etc. Many of the boys lost all they had by the opperation before dark. our Battalion had got their huts all put up. Captain Smith was in command of the Battalion which consisted of 4 companies. the other 6 companies were to come on the Wheelbarrow (Union) Saturday night the other companies came up but did not get into camp until Sunday afternoon. The Regiment is all together once again but how long we shall remain so I do not know. I am satisfied with the camp hope we shall have a better rest. I am well and strong. I went over to Newbern yesterday and enjoyed myself much. please excuse bad writing mistakes etc. Give love to Grandma, the children, Aunty Abby & write soon please for I have not received a letter from you for about 2 months. I sent $15.00 please let me know when you received it. Your aff. son Arthur W. Palmer\"

The last few lines on the 4th page are a bit light.

The 8th Connecticut fought in the Battle of New Bern and then joined the Army of the Potomac for Antietam.
