On July 2, 1881, just four months after taking office, the 20th President of the United States, James A. Garfield, was walking through a railroad station on his way to deliver a speech at Williams College. It was here that he was assassinated by a disgruntled office-seeker, Charles J. Guiteau.

President Garfield did not die immediately. One bullet had grazed his arm, but another lodged in his spine. The President’s condition would worsen over the next several weeks, infection causing his heart to weaken, while he remained bedridden in the White House. After two months, he was moved to the New Jersey shore, where it was hoped that fresh air and serene surroundings would aid in his recovery, but this was not to be and Garfield died on September 19, 1881 (probably due as much to his physicians’ incompetence as to his gunshot wound).

The item up for sale is a very scarce “Special Edition” issue of Harper’s Weekly published immediately after Garfield was shot, when no one knew whether the President would survive. In addition to a contemporary narrative, there are 5 outstanding wood-engraved illustrations in this issue, showing various scenes related to the assassination. (One of these engravings, on the front cover, shows an excellent portrait of Guiteau, so well delineated as to be almost photographic in quality.]

[The wood engraved portrait of Guiteau on the cover was, in fact, modeled after a photograph taken by noted Washington photographer C. M. Bell, but because the technology was not yet available for Harper’s to reproduce a photograph directly, photos were only used as the basis for an engraving - in effect, the engraver used the photo as a model for his wood engraving, which had to be drawn on a block of wood and then engraved by hand.]

The content of this issue is broken down into:

      • James A. Garfield
      • The Story of the Crime
      • Arrest of the Assassin
      • The President’s Wife
      • The Night-Watch in the White House
      • Guiteau’s Career
      • The Press on the Crime
      • The President and the is a great piece of historical memorabilia, an attempt to quickly acquaint the American public with the latest information concerning the second presidential assassination in American history.

SIZE: This special edition of Harper\'s Weekly is an 8-page report, each page measuring 15 by 11 inches

CONDITION: This relatively rare piece of historical presidential memorabilia is in very good overall condition, with no major flaws. However, there are a few imperfections. There is some separation at the spine and creases in the corners of two pages, which were corrected with archival tape, and two pages were trimmed closely for a small portion of their outside margins. Although none of the minor faults result in any loss of text or affect the appearance of the illustrations, they are present and I have taken that into account in pricing this item. Overall, this is a very good specimen of this rare issue (I haven\'t seen any for sale on for a while now, although I have seen offerings of the 5 engravings from this issue being sold individually)

This antique illustrated journal is guaranteed to be an ORIGINAL – it was published 136 years ago and is not a reprint or any other type of reproduction

I’m a longtime collector, not a dealer, and over the past 55+ years I have collected a great variety of historical memorabilia. After retiring, I decided it was time to sell some of the items from my various collections, and I have found a very good way to reach other collectors who might be interested in some of these.

Please see my “response” for how others have evaluated the quality of items from my collection that I have previously sold on .
