Height - 9.25\" (23.5 - 11.25\" (28.5 - 4.75\" (12 cm) DESCRIPTION:

Rare and possibly unique Austrian bronze candelabra or candleholder designed as a garden gate and decorated with a naturalistic cold-painted bronze songbird, attributed to Franz Bergman, and four cold-painted bronze butterflies.

Unsigned. Austria circa 1900 - 1910. Marked only with a \"7\" stamped into
the bottom of one of the center uprights. one

This piece was made to be a table ornament and double candlestick. At the front there are two chains, with rings at the ends, that originally that originally held the tops of two cut glass crystal condiment jars. Now the two jars are missing and only the tops are present, as can be seen in the last photograph. The jars would have been set into the bronze reserves, on either side of the gate.

The piece is decorated with a bronze songbird, that although it appears to be unsigned, can definitely be attributed to Franz Bergman, as the detail is so fine and realistic. I have had a number of Bergman bronzes that were unsigned, especially animated songbirds.

There are also four colorfully painted butterflies which have thin wire legs and antennae. The front of the gate has a small handle which does not move but indicates that this architectural minature is indeed a gate. The back of the gate has two curved rests, probably for a candle-snuffer, or possibly for a utensil to use with the condiments that were in the jars.

The overall design of this piece is very much in the Austrian Secessionist style of the day and I have never seen another like it in over 30 years buying and selling Austrian - Vienna bronzes.AGE: Circa 1900 - 1910. CONDITION:

Good condition, as shown in the photos and with the following noted: Old darkened, unpolished patina to the surfaces of the gate. Light wear to the painted surfaces. Several of the uprights that hold the two jars are slightly bent outward, could easily be bent back. Missing the cut glass condiment jars, as noted above. Jars could be replaced and the tops to the original jars will be included (pictured). No losses of restorations to the bronze birds or butterflies or gate.
