This Gorgeous Old 1930\'s SantoDomingo Pueblo Depression Era Necklaceis an authentic Antique made from hand carved \"found materials\" assembled to create a Striking and Colorful Mosaic Thunderbird Necklace! Securelystrung on sturdy natural string or sinew, this Gorgeous Necklace features hand made and drilled 5mm to 6mm aged naturalbone beads interspersed with ten (10) triangularshaped carved black tabs displaying a Colorful Mosaic Overlay, consisting of hand carved red celluloid or plastic material and naturalTurquoise chip. Each Mosaic Pendant, or Tab measures 13/16\" long by 1/4\" wide graduating in size up to 1\" long by 1/2\" at widestend, and all are roughly 1/4” thick. The Striking Large Thunderbird Naja also features Mosaic Overlay consisting of artisticallyhand carved and hand assembled white plastic or celluloid materialsfixed to the hardblack backing. The Large Thunderbird is accented with beautifully aged Multi-colored Blue and GreenTurquoise Chip to perfectly finish this Beautiful Old Necklace!Large Thunderbird Naja measures 2-11/16\" in length by 1-11/16\" atwidest point (Wing span). \"DepressionEra\" Necklaces originated around the 1930s, butwere sold well into the 1960s. Inspired by the prehistoric tab style popular atall the Rio Grande pueblos, these necklaces were produced in a time whentraditional materials were too expensive or not available. Consequently, thesenecklaces were made from found materials and were the first jewelry items forwhich the Santo Domingo Pueblo became so well-known. Of the materials used tocreate these necklaces, the beads and background bases for the mosaic weretypically bone or shell, the coarsely applied mosaic pieces were cut fromphonograph records or old car battery casing, red toothbrush handles andgenuine turquoise chips. Gypsum, Bakelite shards and plastic utensils have alsobeen known to be used. Although these necklaces were sold quite inexpensivelyby the roadside and at Pow Wows, good examples of this type of jewelry havebecome difficult to find. Highly sought after by avid collectors, a DepressionEra Necklace in pristine condition can be sold for well over a thousand dollarsin today’s market. There is a primitive quality and charm to these necklaces,and the more colorful and well made examples are expensive and really quitestriking.
