Cuneiformis a system of writing first developed by the ancient Sumerians
of Mesopotamia c. 3500-3000 BCE. It is considered the most significant
among the many cultural contributions of the Sumerians and the greatest
among those of the Sumerian city of Uruk which advanced the writing of
cuneiformc. 3200 pot shard is curved with the grooves formed during manufacture
easily recognisable on the inner side of the fragment. Wonderful example
set in clay of the earliest writing, on what may have been an offering vessel
or storage jar holding some commodity traded at that time. Only a small
portion of the recovered Cuneiform tablets and fragments have been deciphered
as there are a very small number of experts able to do so. If you click on the
link to wikipedia above it explains quite well the enormity of the task ahead of
those experts. In general the tablets are written trade contracts of varying types.
Use of Cuneiform ceased around 100 BCE.
