HISTORY
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 188thMaintenance Battalion on 31 August 1966. It was redesignated effective 18 June2007, for the 188th Support Battalion with description and symbolism updated. Agold color metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height overallconsisting of a gold oak tree bearing a crescent above a Roman sword, bothcrimson, the sword surmounting the tree diagonally from upper left to lowerright. The oak tree, symbol of strength, stands for the direct support providedby the Battalion. The Roman sword refers to the unit\'s participation in severalcampaigns in Italy during World War II. It also alludes to the Battalion\'smission of providing maintenance support for small arms. The crescent, ancientemblem of North Africa, refers to the organization\'s initial war experience inthat area. Crimson is the principal color used for the Flags of MaintenanceBattalions, the previous designation of the unit.
