ABRAHAM LINCOLN. Autograph legal document handwritten by Abraham Lincoln concerning the final outcome of the case Joseph Gundy vs. John Van Gundyin Vermilion County Circuit. The Gundy brothers were suing one another over the dissolution of their business partnership and Lincoln was representing John Van Gundy.

AUTOGRAPH LEGAL DOCUMENT HANDWRITTEN BY ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND SIGNED BY HIS 1860 CAMPAIGN MANAGER AND SUPREME COURT JUSTICE DAVID DAVIS

The present document presents the court’s finding in favor of the complainant, Joseph Gundy, and calls upon defendant, John Van Gundy, to pay his brother the sum of $415.00 within five days, thus ending the dispute. The document reads in full: “Joseph Gundy vs. John Van Gundy, Decree, [handwritten on the verso], Pay to the said complainant the said sum of four hundred & fifteen dollars within five days, and in default of said sum being paid, that an execution issue against the goods & chattel land & tenements of the said defendant as on judgements at law. And that the complainant pay all the costs of this said [handwritten on the recto]”. The last part of the document is handwritten and signed by Judge David Davis, who would later serve as Lincoln’s campaign manager at the 1860 Republican National Convention and an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court,“Enter this, D. Davis”.

Highly desirable historical document regarding a case the future President lost. The document is one page with a docket on the verso, measures 7.5” by 4”, created in [October 1851], in fine condition with minor chipping to the edges and small separations to the bottom horizontal fold, and beautifully matted and framed with an original steel engraving of Lincoln.
