BURNETT, FRANCES HODGSON. Autograph letter signed (signature lightly smeared from letter being folded before the ink was dry), 5 pages, 4 1/2\" x 7\", on mourning stationery, Hunton Rectory, Galding, Kent, no date [but autumn 1896]. A good letter to a Miss [Mrs?] Grahame, apparently a friend and an aspiring author, describing her recent illness which developed just after their last meeting and sending word of her recovery from heart failure, mentioning her son\'s travels abroad, and complimenting the recipient on a story she has written: \". . . . I was much interested in the Heroine and though it is . . . a little tragedy it made me feel that you have the story telling facility. Please use it, dear girl, to say things as beautiful[sic] as you can. Don\'t let yourself be moroffer. Be a realist of the lovely things. They are as real as the dreadful ones & we need to be helped to believe in them. There are so many dark things that it is never necessary that our attention should be called to them. They darken the sunshine enough. You will write very successfully I am sure. . . .\" Folds; some mild offsetting of ink; traces of prior mounting on blank verso, else very good.
