A LEGAL DOCUMENT IN THE HAND OF, AND INITALEDBY, THE VERY RARE NORTH CAROLINA DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE SIGNER WILLIAMHOOPER


WILLIAM HOOPER (1742-1790).A Signer of the Declaration of Independence from North Carolina, Hooperstarted as a lawyer and was elected to the Continental Congress in 1774. He was not present when the vote forindependence was taken but still signed the Declaration of Independence. He later served in the North Carolinalegislature and recouped his personal fortune, which was damaged when theBritish invaded North Carolina.


ADS. 2pg. 8” x 6 ½”. September24, 1778. Salisbury District, North Carolina. A partly printed document signed “WH”with initials on the lower part of the verso.Hooper also filled out much of the front part of the legal document anda number of words on the back. The legaldocument orders the Sherriff of Anson County to seize five pounds, twoshillings and one penny from James Farr for damages in the suit filed by JohnSteen. The words “in the third year of American Independence” is printed at thebottom. The document was then signed atthe conclusion of the first page by “H. Gifford”. There is light waterstaining on the bottommargin and the overall condition is very good.The Autograph Collectors Checklist lists Hooper’s signature as “veryrare in any form.”
