Civil War Soldier\'s Correspondence 6 LettersVery Nice correspondence of (6) six letters, all written by Thomas Conley, a Civil War Union soldier, stationed with the 1st Division, of the 14th Army Corps and all are written to his sister Kate Gabriel of Brown County, Ohio. Letters span from Jan 28, 1862 to May 21, 1865 and cover a great deal of topics, both military and personal.
Brief summary of each letter follows:

5) Dateline of Crow Creek, Alabama, August 25, 1863 (3 pages). Conley's company commander (Captain DeBruin) has resigned and gone home. Conley figures that the commander has made enough money as quartermaster to last him awhile. Complained he "was gone all the time" anyway. Are rantioned plenty to eat including six ears of corn per day, peaches and sweet potatoes. Tells interesting story of stealing a bushel of sweet-potatoes and chickens the night before and getting caught by an old woman an interesting dialogue followed. Tells his sister "there are plenty of Rebels downhere yet."

Tells of leaving Raleigh North Carolina the first of May and travelling over 300 miles to Alexandria. He had spent four days in Richmond and "saw all the houses where the rebels leaders used to have. Richmond is a fine city and everything looks prosperous." Saw the battlefields that had been fought over for four years. Saw where George Washington was buried, the bed he died on and the trunks he had with him in the Army. General Sherman army is to be recieved n Washington on May 24, 1865 and he hopes to be home shortly thereafter. Tells his sister this will be his last letter since his coming home.
