First edition, First State. 23 (of 24) coloured plates. A very poor copy. 4to (8 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches), rebound at an early date in brown cloth; the original coloured pictorial cloth cover illustrations excised, trimmed, and laid down. For description of condition please see below. With all but one of the First Edition, 1st State points; viz: Copyright printed to verso of introduction rather than verso of title; publisher\'s advertisement enclosed in box; page 14, line 1 reads \"low wail on\"; page 81, fourth line from bottom reads \"peices\"; perfect type in last lines of pages 100 and 186; page 227, line 1, begins \"While Tin Woodman\"; 11-line colophon enclosed in box. This copy also contains the earliest state of the colour plate facing p.34 with two blots on the moon, however that facing p.92 is without red shading on the horizon, indicating a 2nd state of this plate? Being re-bound the pastedowns are plain.
Condition: Lacking coloured plate at p. 198. Tear in lower margin of title through date with no loss. Stitching cracked. Plate at p. 44 detached and worn on margins; plate at p.66 detached with slight marginal wear; plate at p. 80 with corner crease; plate at p. 92 with two strips of sellotape on inner margin to blank margin of facing text; plate at p.102 with two corner creases; plate at p.114 some marginal wear; plate at p.160 detached sellotaped in on inner margin to text leaves 160 & 161 slightly onto the text, margins of plate worn with some loss to printed blue border; plate at p. 170 with three bands of sellotape on inner margin, margins worn and chipped; plate at p. 254 with two bands of sellotape on inner margin, margins with wear, tears and creasing; the remaining 11 plates very sound. The last 4 leaves of text with 2 bands of sellotape on inner margins, some marginal wear to last leaf of text; colophon leaf sellotaped on inner margin covering a small part of the border of the colophon and with piece torn from upper blank fore-corner. Contemporary gift inscription in pencil on recto of publisher\'s advertisement leaf. A few odd thumb marks to margins of text, the text however generally very good. For restoration or cannibalizing ?
