This fellow is just beautiful! It is from the 1920\'s, made from composite, with paper mache. The piece is hand painted, and really lovely, in good condition! The finish has some slight wear, and is starting to chip a bit, but there are no breaks, cracks or big issues. It has wonderful antique patina - the aged look that items get over time. There is no plug on the bottom.

It is unmarked, but of exceptional German quality, and made in Germany. It stands 6 1/2" tall. Composite is a combination of sawdust, glue, plaster, and in this case paper mache. These hand made candy containers from the 1920\'s are pieces of folk art - as they are hand made, they are all slightly different. They were made by families using the same tools and patterns for generations, passing the tools and patterns down from father to son.

This type of candy container was not made much during the 1930\'s - the Great Depression hit, and this type of container was too expensive for most people. The paper mache pulp container became the more popular one, as it was much less expensive. By 1938 Germany was involved in WWII, and novelties weren\'t made in Germany until after the war in the 1940\'s.

The newer containers are often made from molded cardboard, and just feel "new". They don\'t have the patina that the old ones do. Even if a container was in storage for the time from the 1930\'s until present, it will have developed a certain fragility. You can often tell the difference when you hold them in your hands. I have been working with this type of container since the 1980\'s, and have become familiar with the difference. You can buy with confidence from me.

I have lots of antique candy containers, so take a look. This one, and all that I sell, are guaranteed old and authentic.
