The 19th Century produced an explosion of innovators and inventors who perfected the design and production of beehives, systems of management and husbandry, stock improvement by selective breeding, honey extraction and marketing. Preeminent among these innovators was AMOS IVES ROOT who pioneered the manufacture of hives and the distribution of bee-packages in the United States.Amos Ives Root (1839 – 1923) developed innovative beekeeping techniques in the United States during the mid-19th century, a period when the industry played an important role in the economy of many communities. He founded his own company, which continues in business to the present day. His wide-ranging interests and curiosity led him to become the only eyewitness to publish articles about successful airplane flights made by the Wright brothers in Ohio in 1904-1905.He began his career as a jewelry manufacturer and took up beekeeping in his twenties as a hobby. Among his major contributions was a method to harvest honey without destroying the beehive. He became a nationally- and internationally-known expert and a wealthy businessman. He lived and worked in Medina, Ohio. This book has been quite instrumental and popular, it is still being reprinted today. This book was originally published in 1877. In its first original release, the object of the book was to collect, condense, verify and utilize information for the public. Since then, it had run through many editions, enlarged and revised. This 1913 edition especially has had an exceptionally large list of entirely new subjects added. Beekeeping was hardly known then as a business; but it has since grown to enormous proportions. Little did A. I. Root dream in 1879 that his work would continue to grow, not only in the size of the book itself, but in thenumber of editions. The original work consisted of 212 pages while the present volume contains 728. Included are actual black and white photographs, charts and illustrations through out the book.A. I. Root was innovative in his field and his company is still in existence today. Published in 1913, this book is in VERY GOOD CONDITION for its age; especially to be 103 YEARS OLD. ALL PAGES ARE PRESENT and firmly bound with NO TEARS!!! or stray in text markings. Including an Index, there are 728 pages in this 6 3/4\" X 9 3/4\" volume.
