FANTASTIC, ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN DIARY, BELKNAP COUNTY, CARROLL COUNTY, AND HOLDERNESS COUNTY, NEW HAMPSHIRE, MEREDITH, SQUAM LAKE, MOULTONBOROUGH, HOLDERNESS, PERSONAL DIARY OF A STORE OWNER, 1910. The diarist is a hard working and fun loving man. He is married to Ethel and they have a son named Gilman, and I believe they live in Moultonborough, NH. When I purchased this diary at an estate sale I was told the owner was Mark Bullard, who had served in the 52nd MA, in the Civil War. I am unable to find the connection, however this diary is extremely interesting and historically important. Our writer, and I will call him Mark, is a hardworking store owner in Meredith, New Hampshire and starts every day by going to the barn/farm and then to open the store and make the fires. Like any store there are some really busy days where \"I have been filling orders all day and Joe has been out with the team and the wagon on deliveries. We are out of nails. The grains, oats and phosphate came in\", etc. and it appears to be a general merchandise store or a farm supply store.
Ma and Pa, and his wife Ethel work there on occasion. Ma and Pa go off to visit Boston on day trips. Mark hires additional help as toward summer the store is getting really busy. They are big into the Grange, and on January 19 he writes: \"Got up at 6 a.m. Was a fine day. Not much doing in the store. We all went to installation of Grange in the evening & I was installed Master by O.P. Smith & wife. Meredith & Holderness Granges were invited and a large crowd was there. Gave Lieutenant a plaque.\" and it went fine as all else did. Had fine supper and got home at 1:45 a.m.\" He and his wife Ethel go to numerous parties, Masonic happenings, dances and gatherings and often get home in the early hours of the morning and he gets up and \"went to the barn and then into the store\" every morning even on Sunday. It appears that no one goes to church.

Mark never really makes note of working on the farm and the store is the families bread and butter operation, even ma and pa work there. Further handwrittenentries include: \"Jan. 24, Up at 5:30 a.m. & went to barn & store. Was fine day all day. Not much doing in the store. In the evening we went to S. Emery\'s golden wedding anniversary and there was a big crowd there. Came home at 11 & retired at 11:15. Wagons began getting numerous, no sleighing in Moultonborough. Put saw dust around the ice house door. Mary Mason gave me a pitcher. Wallace was at the fish house and they are busy. We had a lot of grain come in today and we were quite busy all day. Too much snow & the Sandwich Stage not coming down at all. Pa was up to Smiths all day going over the town books. Swift\'s fertilizer came in. I went to the dentist and have every tooth filled at the same time. We are going to the Masonic Social. Ethel & I went to the Moulton House to a party and had a swell time. Perkins got his auto to run for the first time. Feb. 5, Len James found dead in his barber\'s chair in his shop at Meredith.\"

\"Ethel & I went to Moultonborough in p.m. with Victor (his horse) & Ethel had a tooth taken out. Pa gave her a diamond ring. March 17, Andrew Moulton\'s funeral was today at the church in Moultonborough (Moultonboro), he died suddenly with a shock Sunday night. April 4, Augie began to work for us. April 11, George Mallard began to work for us. April 17, Frances Crom did tonight. May 6, C. E. Georges house burned to ground at 11:30 p.m. and a child 18 months old was burned in it. May, William Connick, Leighton and I all went out in my boat but got no fish\" etc. Friends and family that he associates with include Lisle, Ed Nichols, Chet, Susie (babysits a lot for son Gilman), Putney & Georgie, Helen, Mrs. Bennett, the Simpsons, McCanty, Neal, Joe works in the store, Clint, A. Hutchings, Skip Dow, Alice Perkins, Aunt A., etc. A great piece of history and genealogy from the White Mountain state of New Hampshire.

Condition: Hardbound in red cloth covers with the words \"Daily Reminder\" mid front cover, this daily journal is in good to very good condition, internally fresh and tight and a very worthy acquisition indeed. Oddly enough his last journal entry is on May 9, yet he continues with a monthly run-down of his store finances through Oct. Measures approx. 3 1/2 x 6 inches with just some light wear on the outer covers as seen in images.
