Great 18th Century Adjustable Candleholder

The best of the best when it comes to early American iron lighting! This rare form is a great representation to the art of period blacksmithing work, and in itself just a gem of a period candleholder.

A piece such as this would have been hammered into the beam or mortar of an early home to support a single candle via the rolled iron formed-in candle cup on the end. Note the candle-cup has a formed over edge lip, a nice little design element added by the blacksmith.

Once hammered into a beam or wall via the end spike, the piece would have been adjusted to suit the users need, being moved about by the serpantine action of the shaft, constructed by pinning five pieces of iron together in period construction.

From age there is some slight pitting to the piece,though overall it is in very good original condition.

Fully collapsed the piece measures approximately 7\", fully extended, the piece becomes 29\" in length.

A splendid piece of circa 1750-1780 American wrought iron lighting originating from New England and recently purchased at the spring Brimfield Mass. Antique show from a CT dealer.
