BIG Original 1886 Hand Colored Etching: Kruseman Van Elten\'s \"Winter Evening\" :
$850.00

Van Elten\'s atmospheric etching of a cold and quiet winter evening in New England gently awakens in the viewer an appreciation of the slow paced life in harmony with nature at the turn of the century. With strong vertical and horizontal lines, Van Elten has depicted a scene of stillness -- two men chat at the edge of a frozen stream as their horses and dog wait patiently. A woman in a sled sits listening to her companion. A lone traveler trudges carefully down the snowy, winding road from the village church. There\'s smoke coming from the chimney of the yellow house and the sky is faintly glowing as the winter day draws down. Hendrik-Dirk Kruseman Van Elten (Dutch, 1829-1904) was born in Holland and was a renowned artist in Europe before coming to the United States in 1865. He settled in the Catskill artists\' colony at Ellenville, New York where he was instrumental in introducing the landscape art of Rembrandt, Van de Velde, Ruisdael and many others to American artists. His first American etching was published in 1876 and during the following years he produced many fine views, most notably of river scenes. In his landscapes, he employed Dutch techniques of boldly horizontal formats, low horizons, and an emphasis on wide, open space to construct tranquil images of untouched, American nature. Van Elten achieved prominence in American Art for his oil paintings and etchings and participated in two of the great American exhibitions of the late nineteenth century – the 1876 Universal Exhibition in Philadelphia and the 1893 Colombian Exposition in Chicago. He was a founding member of the American Water-Color Society and the New York Etching Club (1877) and was also a full member of the British Society of Painter-Etchers. He was a member of the Royal Academies in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and was elected an Academician of the National Academy of Design in 1883. After his death in 1904, the American Art Guild in New York held a landmark sale of his work in 1905. Today, the work of Hendrik Dirk Kruseman Van Elten can be found in such important collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Academy of Design Museum, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Smithsonian. The large original etching offered here is a prime example of the nineteenth century landscape art of Hendrik Dirk Kruseman Van Elten-- \"Kruseman Van Elten.\" It is a strongly printed impression and in excellent condition throughout, signed in the plate and hand colored. The plate has a wide border and the paper extends all the way to the frame, unmatted. Within this border, Van Elten has drawn a couple of cute rabbits at the lower left corner and the title \"WINTER EVENING\" is printed faintly in the center. The frame is of carved and gilded wood moulding, 2\" wide and 1.5\" deep. The frame\'s dimensions are 30 x 42.5 inches. The image measures 17.25 x 29.5 inches upon the approximately 26 x 38.5 inches paper. condition: Superb. Mild buckling of the paper. No fading. No rips. No water damage. My photos were taken through the glass; the print was not examined outside of the frame.
