Bill Crawford was probably the foremost political cartoonist of his era. He worked for the Washington Post and Washington Daily News before settling at the Newark (NJ) News. His career spanned decades and his cartoons were distributed to over 700 newspapers. This cartoon is one of his most startling WORLD WAR II images. Mussolini, dictator of Italy, nervously realizes the vulture on his shoulder has ripped out Sicily as the Allied Forces invaded the island in their march to victory. The central image measures 18 by 14 inches on the heavyweight approximately 22 by 18 inch paper. This image is ink and black crayon on fine pebble finish coquille paper with corrections and highlights in white gouache. Crawford shows his incredible mastery of this difficult medium where the pressure of the crayon determines determines the intensity of the line. This is a museum quality piece.
