Pictorial Magazine of the World’s Mightiest Spectacle D.W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation. [Mexia, Texas]: N.p., (circa 1917). 13 3/8” x 10 ¼”. Lithographed self-wrappers. Not paginated, 4 leaves. Near fine with bright fresh interior, light wear and faint marginal toning. A couple of spots to front wrap.

An uncommon program for the terribly racist film that would have simultaneously created great tension, yet also played to welcome audiences in Mexia. Mexia, Texas was the site of one of the first Juneteenth celebrations but as recently as 1990 still had streets with names like “Nigger Creek Road”. We can precisely date this repeat showing to January 10, 1918, a time when Texas legislators worked feverishly to continue the disenfranchisement of African Americans. While the film caused riots in several cities when it was first released in 1915, Mexia apparently survived both showings unscathed.

There appear to be a few variants of Birth of a Nation theater programs with this version being the least common by far. Rare in this condition.
