Dried cottonwood tree root, the only acceptable wood for true kachina carvings. and is the only material Hopi & Zuni people use to carve kachinas. The carvers are spiritually connected to the kachinas they carve and participate in the ceremonies they depict.

Hand carved woodshaped into aBLUE CORN MAIDEN- INITIATIONkachina. Carefully painted with multiple colors and detailed lines burnt into the wood. Approximate height is10-3/4 inches and base width is 3 inches x3-1/2 inches. It\'s a one piece carving and is carved out of the base it\'s standing on.

This beautiful carved kachina is from my personal collection, purchased while working on the Navajo Reservation at Chinle, AZ, fromRobert Numkena, a Hopi carver from Second Mesa, AZ. in 2009.
