BUDDHA:Tibetan Healing Buddha, BHAISAJYAGURU,

Gilt Bronze, Fine Patina, late1800s

This is a magnificent, venerable and extraordinarily handsome figure of the \"Healing Buddha\" or, more properly,Bhaisajyaguru, cast in bronze by the lost wax process and gilded in Tibet in thelate 1800\'s.He could be earlier, but I do not thinkhe is much later than 1900.

His full title in Tibetan isBhaisajyaguru vaiduryaprabha tathagata,\"The Radiant Lapis Lazuli Master of Healing Buddha\". He is revered in the Mahayana Buddhism of Tibet as the supreme dispenser of longevity, protection from disasters and the transmutation of negative states of mind, as all illnesses in Buddhism, by virtue of their karmic origin are considered, to some extent, psychosomatic.

Bhaisajyaguruis typically depicted seated, wearing the robes of a Buddhist monk, holding a jar of medicine nectar in his left hand and the right hand resting on his right knee, holding a branch of the Aruna or Myrobalan plant between thumb and forefinger.

Our Buddha is seated upon a beaded moon disk, raised on a footedlotus petal throne inpadmasana, the adamantine or full lotus position, which is the posture in which he is most often depicted after achieving enlightenment. He is dressed in the robes of a Buddhist monk; the folds of the bottom portion of his garment flow down and out in almost like a representation of the wisdom and healing flowing from him.

In his left hand he holds the jar of amitra, the nectar of healing and longevity, his right hand rests on his right knee, holding the branch of the healing Myrobalan plant. And atop hisushnisha, or topknot, is a simple round orb, symbolic of the wisdom which he radiates. He has the three rings at his neck which mark him as an individual of deep spiritual wisdom

The two things I love most about this figure are the incredibly beautiful patina and the exquisite modeling of his face.

The lotus petal throne, jar of healing nectar, branch of the Myrobalan plant and the orb atop our Buddha\'sushnishawereall gilded, as were the beautifully articulated hems of his garment. Much of the gildinghas naturally worn away.

The rest of the figure has the best, most wonderful chocolate brown patina with red and gold undertones. This can be best seen in thephotographof his back where there are fewersurfacesto reflect the light. This richly colored bronze, with the flashing of the old gold, makes for a complex and beautiful overall patina.

However beautiful the rest of the figure is, it is his face which is this Buddha\'s crowning glory. The exquisite modeling of the face is the work of a master artist showing the typical Tibetan sweetness with high arched eyebrows, half closed, down cast eyes and gentle smile. He has an otherworldly expression of absolute peace and composure.

This figure is8 inches tall, 5 inches wide at the at the edge of the moon disk. There is no seriousdamage whatsoever and no sign of restoration or repair. There is some expected roughness and wear to the bottomedge of the foot of the lotus throne. The surface of the statue is completely stable with no powdering or flaking and the bottom of the figure is sealed in the old way.

The photos give an excellent idea of the beauty and finesse of this extraordinary example of Tibetan Sacred Art.

And thanks for looking.

Due to limitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from the Buddha himself, but I did my best to capture him as he is. And, at least on my monitor, the color is a perfect match.
