I have come across quite a large collection that I\'ll be posting here on over the next several months.

This carving seems to have been originally for making unique paper mache rabbit displays of some type. I\'m guessing for necklaces. Deeper scoring marks down the sides and along ears. There are even bits of paper stuck to it from when it was being used to make paper mache pieces.

The paper mache making process involves first making an original mold. In this case a wood carving of a figurine. In many cases, wood carvings that were made for this purpose tend to have more pronounced features so that the character of the piece is better able to be transferred into the paper mache end product. Most were made to be used to make hundreds of paper mache figurines so the many cycles of wrapping the layers of wet paper mache around the wood, allowing it to dry in the sun then using a knife to cut the dry paper off into two halves to be reconnected together, leaves them with cut marks along the sides. The deeper the marks the more often this mold was used.As always in the case of these carvings there will be minor flaws due to it\'s usage, wood checking, stains, and variations in the grain, all of which only add more character to these wooden hand-carved molds. Each piece is unique and a real work of art in itself.
