\"Battles and Leaders of the Civil War\" is a 4 volume, 8.5\"x11.5\" hardcover set edited by Robert Underwood Johnson and Clarence Clough Buel, and published in 1887 (or at least, copyright 1887) by The Century Co. (New York). This is an early printing, in a later binding. The volumes have 750, 760, 752 and 829 pages, respectively. Each chapter is written, often in the first person, by a participant in the events covered, usually by a significant officer, and sometimes by the General in charge of one of the sides. For example, General Ulysses S. Grant writes about the Battle of Shiloh, General Franz Sigel covers the Pea Ridge Campaign, General John Pope describes the Second Battle of Bull Run, etc. There are numerous black-and-white drawings throughout, and many maps.
The set is in good condition (Vol IV acceptable), without dust jackets. The books have been rebound in what appears to be green leather, with brown tape at the corners - odd choices, admittedly. They show minor wear - the occasional small scratch or stain. The title and volume labels at the spines have mostly fallen off, leaving some residue behind. Each volume has a pencil mark on the second page, and there\'s an ownership mark on the same page in Vol. I. The interiors are a bit age-toned, and there are a few pages with small tears or bent corners, but overall the interiors are in excellent condition. Vol IV is missing the half-title page, frontispiece and title page. The bindings are sturdy.
