Beautiful 1771 N. Appleton&Anne Smith Georgian decorated sterling silver creamer:
$174.99

We are listing this beautifully repousse decorated 1771 crested and wedding monogrammed Georgian sterling silver creamer which was made by the little known London silversmiths Nathaniel Appleton and Anne Smith. The creamer is elegantly shaped, nicely decorated with repousse decorated floral swags, has an elaborately scrolled handle and a deeply punched beaded rim, and it sits on a bright cut decorated conical foot with a beaded edge. There is a cartouche on the front with an incised crest of a very leafy tree (I do not know the meaning or family association of this crest), and a 1781 wedding is memorialized on the top of the base with an incised M over I*S betrothal monogram and TYES PLACE 1781. Tyes Place is an historic mansion in Staplefield West Sussex, and I would assume it was the location of the wedding. The creamer is marked under its rim on one side with a lion passant, a crowned leopard\'s head, the date letter b (used in 1759-1760), and a distinctive clover shaped maker\'s mark of N A vertically crossing A S horizontally. This mark was registered in 1771 by the little known London silversmiths Nathaniel Appleton and Anne Smith, who apparently never operated individually as silversmiths (see page 20 of Grimwade\'s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837). The creamer is 4.25 inches tall, almost 4 inches at its widest point, weighs 3.2 ounces, it is beautifully decorated, crested, and monogrammed, makes a wonderful and most interesting display piece, and it is in very good overall condition. There is a very tiny shallow dent in the cartouche, and there are short splits on the back rim on either side of the handle join (see the last picture for one of them). Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the creamer has not been professionally polished). A very attractive and fully functional piece of fancy Georgian crested and monogrammed silver, and an interesting piece of history as well.
