ANTIQUE HAND WROUGHT MARTELE CHALICE
Striking and unusual antique hand chased silverplate chalice measuring 4-1/4\" tall by 5\" wide. Featuring a bowl shape which curves into a wide, straight stem and flat foot, chalice is hand hammered around the curved top edge with a lovely Art Nouveau stylized design - the underside, stem and foot are polished to a high silver with a decorative chased trim line around the stem, repeating on the underside of the foot -- this matches the trim line around the top edge. Marked H.S.Co. for Hartford Sterling Company, Philadelphia, PA, USA., it bears hallmarks of a lion, crown and unicorn -- stamped HAND WROUGHT MARTELE with the design number M 4002. Condition is lovely with no dents, discoloration, cracks, chips, rust or damage. There are fine overall scratches to the highly polished finish and a gorgeous warm patina to the silver - unmarked, I am guessing silverplate. Just a striking shape - so unusual in design and form - the chasing and Art Nouveau influence takes it over the top. Lovely addition to any home, collection or display!
