This listing is for a mid-19th century Austrian silver gilt, enamel and jeweled nef ship center piece. It measures 13 inches or 33 cm high, and is 9 ¼ inches or 23.5 cm long. The nef weighs 52.63 troy ounces or 1634.4 grams.

The nef is beautiful and elaborate the hull of the ship sits on two axels with four moving wheels. The ship is decorated with gemstone jewels, seed pearls, red enamel on the hull and highlighted with heavy applied gold highlights. The sails of the ship are also enameled in a green-blue color. The silver has a vermeil wash, which has darkened over time. The silver is marked on the rudder with the Austrian wing mark with the letter “W” for Vienna and the number “1” for 0.935 silver standards, the silver has been tested and is guaranteed to be so. The side of the hull also has a museum inventory number on the side, in partial, it reads “513-6…”.

A nef is an extravagant table ornament and container made of precious metals in the shape of a ship – nef was another word for a carrack in French. If not just used for decoration, it could hold salt or spices, or cutlery, or even napkins. Nefs are usually made of silver, silver-gilt or gold, often further embellished with enamel and jewels. The wheels on the nef allow them to be rolled from one end of the table to the other. The nef was placed in front of the most important person at table as a mark of their status.

The condition of the nef is as follows; there is age appropriate darkening to the silver gilt, and some minor chipping to the enamel work on the sides of the hull. The sail at the front of the ship is not attached to the mast and needs repair, as with the pennant Flag at the top. The elaborate wirework seems to be in good condition and all present, there is one jewel missing on the side of the ship. Please see the many photographs for more on the look and condition as they are an important part of the description.
