Offered for sale is this beautiful Bronze Art Nouveau wine cooler from the famous German Art Nouveau metalware firm, WMF. Based on the makers mark found embossed in the base of this item, it can be dated to the periodbetween 1888 and 1918, making it a one hundred year old piece. The makers mark is quite difficult to spot, but is still clearly visible with a magnifying glass, and reads OX WMFM 0/1. If you zoom in on the photo of the bottom you can see these marks. From what I have been able to ascertain, the letter M at the end of WMFM indicates that the base metal used was Brass. The OX and 0/1 imply that, at one time, this magnificent wine bucket or wine cooler was plated, almost certainly in Silver. Alas, as one can clearly see, any of the original plating is long since gone. Nevertheless, the dark Brass material is striking and bears the patina of it\'s century long existence.
The piece has beautiful, deep, and clearly embossed designs featuring bunches of grapes with leaves that encircle the upperportion of the piece, and beautiful and quite unusual patterns encircling the base, which to my eye, appear almost be seedlings or seed pods emerging from the ground. The handles are substantial, sinuous, and split to provide a secure and very attractive design element. The overall design is highly symbolic and epitomizes the flowing, organic feel of all Art Nouveau designs. This is a substantial item, and measures 11.5 inches across, including the handles, 7.5 inches in diameter for the actual opening, is 8.5 inches tall and weighs a hefty 2 LBS 12.5 OZS. This is solid and very well made. Other than the loss of plating it once may have had, it is in excellent condition, with only a minor ding which doesn\'t in any way detract from its appearance.
This lovely wine cooler can still be used for its intended use, to be proudly displayed with a bottle of wine or champagne, but I never did so out of respect for the art it conveyed. It would make a fine addition for anyone who collects Art Nouveau, metalware and WMF pieces!
