Beautiful extremely rare 1790s Turner classical Georgian stoneware vase/root pot:
$599.99

We are listing this stunning looking extremely rare 1790s Georgian white stoneware classical flower vase or root pot (set on a polished basalt base) by the great English potter John Turner (a friend and later competitor of Josiah Wedgwood), who was appointed The Potter to The Prince of Wales in 1784. The vase is impressed on the bottom of its basalt base with the TURNER mark (partially double struck) used by John Turner (and his sons William and John) from 1780-1806. Elaborate flower vases were popular with the ladies in Georgian high society, and this rarely seen form was called a root pot by Turner. They are virtually unknown outside of museums and renowned collections - you can see an identical pair from the Blake Collection on page 183 of ENGLISH DRY-BODIED STONEWARE Wedgwood and Contemporary Manufacturers 1774-1830 (the book mentions there are also caneware and blue jasper examples known to exist). John Turner was known for the hard, dense dry-bodied stoneware he created using a specific type of white clay, and for the quality and innovative nature of his sprigging, which rivaled and sometimes surpassed Wedgwood\'s. This piece epitomizes the qualities that made him so famous, with its beautifully potted creamy white body, highly polished black basalt base, and innovative design featuring lion paw feet resting on balls above the basalt base, heads of female Roman seers (think Julius Caesar and the Ides of March) on top of each corner, and truly superb high relief sprigged classical maidens/goddesses set in oval plaques on each side. The piece 8.25 inches tall, almost 7 inches at its widest point diagonally, it is superbly shaped and detailed, it makes a stunning display piece, and it is in very good overall condition. As beautiful and delicate as these pieces are, they were also functional flower vases in the Georgian era, which has led to most of them being damaged in one way or another. This piece has a couple of tiny flakes off the top edge on one side, and one of the corner pieces has been glued back on which is shown in the last picture (the cracks and restoration are visible on close inspection, but they really don\'t affect the look of the item on display). John Turner\'s masterpieces can be found in many of the great museums and personal collections around the world, and this is a truly stunning looking example of both his creativity and his attention to detail, and definitely an extremely rare collector\'s item as well. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself.
