This superb knifewing pin by Gary and Pauline Vacit is attributed on the basis of the details of the design, which they have used in other documented pieces. This is a particularly old and beautiful example, with a gorgeous array of turquoise and red shell ranging from red abalone that is very dark to very light in color, along with one piece of white clam shell and a piece of jet, and a similarly complex array in the turquoise examples used as used in the abalone, ranging from blues to greens, some with dark matrix and some with no matrix. The silver work is very fine with twisted wire framing and rows of stamped raindrops framing the bottom of the wings and tail as well as the earrings. Just a very fine and very beautiful work of art indeed. A nice solid weight and 14.3grams and a size of 2\" high x 1.5\" wide.

Gary Vacit was the son of Frank Vacit and Pauline was the daughter of Julalita Lamy, so both came from a spectacular lineage in Zuni jewelry making. This piece probably dates to the 1950s a stunning and early example in excellent vintage, wearable and collectible condition. Unsigned and not marked for silver content as is usual for those times, but unmistakably excellent. The rollover locking clasp works fine; no issues but very fine quality work, on this piece.

The legendary figure in Zuni – Knifewing – was half-man, half-eagle with knife-shaped feathers, or wings. Knifewing was a warrior known as the Great One who came down from his ethereal plateau to bestow wisdom, strength and courage amongst his recipients, only revealing himself to the warriors who serve as protectors of the Pueblo. Flint arrowheads found in and around Zuni area are said to have come from the wings of the Knifewing as he flew over the land.

The work is superb and this is the finest possible example for your collection. I just love this pin and I think you will too.

Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions. I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.
