This rare chromolithograph plate is fromthe 1881 edition of:

JACOB HENRY STUDER’S POPULARORNITHOLOGY, THE BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA DRAWN AND COLORED FROM NATURE BYTHEODORE JASPER, A. M., M. D.…EDITED AND PUBLISHED BY JACOB H STUDER & CO.TRIBUNE BUILDING NEW YORK CITY AND COLUMBUS, OHIO

The book was found in a box lot at anestate sale in Versailles, KY. It was agift from Mrs. H. H. Gratz of Lexington, KY to the previous owner in 1889. The book had no back and the gilded cover washalf destroyed, however the interior plates were in near mint condition, withprotective tissue pages and heavy gilt on the page edges. Since it was beyond repair as an antiquebook, I carefully removed the individual plates and retained the left side ofthe page with the original binding holes intact.

We are offering the individualchromolithographs for their artistic, historic, and decorative value.

Folio size each plate app: 14 ½ x 11 ¼inches

Condition: excellent, colors bright,fresh, and crisp. There are some individualplates with fingerprints and smudges (please examine the photos/scans) thatwill need to be removed, but overall the plates are in remarkablecondition.

I have included a photo/scan of thisbook’s original front cover, title page, and dedication that you may print foryour records. Many of the plates containseveral different birds that you can identify by researching the publisher’scomments for each individual plate in the digital version of the later 1903edition at wisc.edu – look for Studer, Jacob Henry, 1840-1904. / Birds of NorthAmerica in the Digital Library for the Decorative Arts and Material Culture.

TheodoreJasper (13 July 1814, Prussia – 6 June 1897, Columbus, Ohio) was a portraitpainter and photographic colorist active in Columbus, Ohio from circa 1866 to1883. From the 1840s to the 1860s he worked in New York and Connecticut(Haverstock, 2000). His paintings formed the basis for Studer\'s PopularOrnithology, a late 19th-century work that had several editions withchromolithographic copies of Jasper\'s art.

JacobHenry Studer (26 February 1840 Columbus, Ohio - 2 August 1904 New York City)was a printer, lithographer, painter, and popular ornithologist active inColumbus, Ohio from the 1860s to the 1880s. He was also author of a workentitled Columbus, Ohio; its History, Resources, and Progress (1873). Hefounded the Board of Trade of Columbus in 1872 (New York Times, 1904). Studerwas active in the American Ornithologists\' Union and the Ohio Society of NewYork. Later in his life, Studer resided in New York City (Haverstock, 2000; NewYork Times, 1904), apparently as early as 1887 (New York Times, 1887). He isbest known as the author of Studer\'s Popular Ornithology. This work had severaleditions, published over the period 1874 to 1903 (Cornell University). It wasillustrated with chromolithographs after paintings by Theodore Jasper. Studerdied in his office (Manhattan Building, 96th 5th Avenue), where he also livedat the time. A son, James Studer, survived him (New York Times, 1904). Othermembers of his family predeceased him: Caroline Buss Studer (died 2 September1871, age 30), daughters Mary Francisca and Anna Regina (both died April, 1876,ages 11 and 13), and another son John Bernard Studer (died 11 May 1901, age32), according to the dedication page of the 1903 edition of Studer\'s PopularOrnithology
