The first thing one notices about this book, aside from the price, is its size! With 700 plus pages and over 1,200 photos it is bound to be one of the larger books in one\'s library. Since this is not a book that you could find at most bookstores I will try to provide an idea of the contents and let you decide if it is a worthwhile purchase.
In the book\'s first 200 or so pages the author gives a very thorough historical account of the struggles, successes and development of the field of commercial aviation in Britain; an engaging story told in hundreds of pictures as well as extensive text.
The next portion of the book, spanning nearly 250 pages, looks at each aircraft type. The format of this section is similar to books in the Putnam range, with the development and performance of each type, photos, technical specifications and 3-view drawings presented. While few cockpit photos are available, photos of the cabin interiors are included for numerous types.
Following this are condensed histories of each aircraft manufacturer from their inter-war years, then a look at British engine and propellor makers. This last bit is a smart and welcomed addition that will be of great interest to modellers.
The remainder of the book, another 250 pages, takes the reader through drawing board projects and less than successful designs, as well as production totals for each aircraft, commercial operators, the saga of Imperial Airways Flying Boat services and various useful indices.
Prior to the publication of this book one needed all of the various Putnam publications on British aircraft manufacturers, as well as the issues of Aeroplane Monthly containing John Stroud\'s Wings of Peace articles covering British subjects to have the breadth of coverage contained here. Although covering common ground, this is more than simply a collection of the above material and part of what makes this book stand on its own are the photographs. The over 1,200 photos in this book includes literally hundreds of rare or previously unpublished photos. On the average there are 1 to 3 photos per page, all of very good quality and for modellers close examination of these will reveal a wealth of small details. In addition to the photos themselves, the captions are worth mentioning, as in most cases a full paragraph of relevant information is given rather than just identification of the aircraft or location.
