This VERY rare British 1768bearskin cap is complete with brass plate on the front was found in the BritishRedoubt # 4 by CaptainJohn Givens of the Augusta Virginia Militia on October 20, 1781 just a day after the British surrender on October19th. It is complete with theoriginalbrass plate on the front, red wool cloth on the back &leather band inside. Thewhite cotton insert onthe inside is a newer replacement. A lot of the bearskin fur has deteriorated &fallen off but about 10% still remains on the lower back & both sides butthe skin is complete & in good condition.The brass plate shows alion over a crown with G (on the left) R (on the right) over a knights helmet withlaurel branches sticking of both sided. There is a banner with NEC (on theleft) ASPERS (in the center) TERRENT on the right) across the top.It sits about 16: tall& is about a men’s size 6. This hat has been examined by The Smithsonian in Washington D.C. & pronounced as authentic! Itis a VERY rare piece of British Revolutionary War history & caps like thisare very seldom seen here in America!
