This piece was handcrafted in Americaby this hemisphere\'s most accomplished restorer and replicator ofmilitary headgear, using meticulously researched patterns andbackground information. Shako is constructed of shellacked fur felt(that\'s fur felt—not wool felt, and notfabric-covered buckram),in a full 8 1/2” height. This last is an authentic dimension,which sets this piece apart from other shakos, since otherreplicators often experience difficulty in blocking a felt hood tothis height. Body is trimmed with enameled oak-tanned leather visor,calfskin sweatband, and natural linen headnet--all completelyhandsewn. Rifles Green cords are of exquisite woolen worsted, hungin “British Style”--as the for-and-aft looping was called in theday (they could be rearranged in one of the other styles to suit thewearer). Insignia is an original—but of later than Napoleonicmanufacture. Cockade is of silk grosgrain, and plume is of roosterfeathers. No synthetics or blends—of fabric or thread—were usedin constructing this piece.
Although it appears wear of regimentalnumerals was uncommon amongst Other Ranks in the years leading up toWaterloo, a set of original German silver numerals for the 95th(see photo) are included if requested by the winning buyer. Thisshako was not intended to appeal to reenactors on a budget.
