British Pattern 1821 Light Cavalry Officer\'s Sword & Scabbard, Victorian:
$395.00

Nice Victorian British Light Cavalry officer\'s sword, with typical \'3-bar\' hilt. Judging by the style of the hilt and etching I\'d date it to around 1870 - 1880 (Zulu war era).

The steel guard is in good condition with no bends. The exterior is bright and smooth, and the interior has some light background staining. The backpiece is clean and fairly bright, with some very light cleaned pitting overall. The sharkskin grip is generally good, with a small section missing to the underside. All of the original binding wires are present. The sword knot is old and a bit stained, but in good shape for its age.

The fullered blade is is clean and bright, with small spots of light background staining, but no pitting other than a couple of light spots at the point. The LH side of the ricasso is etched with foliage motifs and the maker\'s name of \'Hawkes & Co, London, Manufacturers to the Queen, and above this are the crowned royal arms, with lion and unicorn either side. Further up the blade is the crowned royal cypher \'VR\' (Victoria Regina), along with foliage motifs above and below. This is duplicated on the RH side of the blade. The RH ricasso is etched with a star, within which is a brass proof-mark which is stamped \'Proved\' with a fleur-de-lis at the centre. Immediately above the ricasso is further floral etching. The etching is generally excellent, being crisp and clear, with very little wear. Note that Hawkes were one of the best names in military outfitting and tailoring in the 19th century, and their name lives on in \'Gieves & Hawkes\' (look \'em up on Wikipedia).

The steel scabbardis very sound and fairly bright, with a few minor dents or dings, and with patches of light staining overall. The blade fits fine. The shoe (drag) is worn, which indicates service use.
